Philosophy of Teaching Mathematics
Mathematics is an essential part of a person’s everyday life. You can find mathematics in everything that you do! Telling time, using money, and being surrounded by different patterns are all excellent examples in which math is used every day. Math is an extremely significant subject to learn, especially at the elementary level. There are various techniques in which mathematics can be taught. Elementary school is where students learn the fundamental concepts of mathematics and then carry these ideas with them throughout their lives.
I believe that there are many effective ways for a student to learn mathematics. A teacher can contribute many different ideas to enhance a student’s learning experience in the classroom. Using an assortment of manipulatives throughout different lessons can improve a child’s understanding of the concept in which they are learning. Manipulatives and “hands on” activities allow students to visualize and better comprehend the material that they are learning. For most students, this is a very helpful learning technique. I also believe that group work is a vital part to a child’s education. Group work allows the students to work together cooperatively and interact with one another. It also enables them to think as a team, help each other out, and most importantly children learn from each other. When one student does not understand a concept, another student might be able to explain it in a different way that makes more sense to the other student. A child’s education is the key to their success.
As a teacher, I am willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that every student understands each aspect of mathematics. It is my job to teach in a way that best suites every individual student. Teaching one concept in multiple ways can be very accommodating for students. I want to be certain that every student is being challenged to a healthy level that will encourage more learning. Learning should be an enjoyable, motivating, and meaningful experience for all students!
